The artist behind the Statue of Liberty is Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor. He designed the statue as a symbol of freedom and democracy, which was a gift from France to the United States. The statue was completed in 1884 in France, then disassembled and shipped to New York, where it was reassembled and dedicated on October 28, 1886. Bartholdi was inspired by classical art and wanted the statue to represent Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty. The internal structure was engineered by Gustave Eiffel, who later designed the Eiffel Tower. The Statue of Liberty has since become an iconic symbol of the United States and a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving by sea.
